A SUMMER WEDDING AT THE GREAT BARN
DISCOVER THEIR STORY

BUILT FOR ATMOSPHERE.
MADE FOR FILM.

Dean + Charlotte married at The Great Barn in July 2019, on a wonderfully bright summer's day. It was my first time filming there, and it quickly became one of those venues I knew I would remember.

Both Dean and Charlotte were able to get ready within the same complex, which meant I could move naturally between bridal prep and groom prep and preserve both sides of the morning without forcing either part of the day.

But the thing that stayed with me most was the light — particularly the way it transformed the Barn for their ceremony.

GOOD LIGHT DOESN'T
ALWAYS MEAN MORE LIGHT.

The Great Barn had been beautifully renovated in the years before Dean + Charlotte's wedding, and one of its most distinctive features for me as a filmmaker was the control it gave over the atmosphere inside.

The lighting could be adjusted for each wedding, with individual beams creating pools of light through the Barn. For their ceremony, the room was deliberately dark and dramatic, with those beams crossing through the space rather than simply flooding it with light.

Soft candles lined the aisle, adding another layer of warmth. On camera, the combination was beautiful: directional, atmospheric light that gave the ceremony depth and a genuinely cinematic feel.

FROM CANDLELIGHT
TO GARDEN PARTY.

Stepping outside after the ceremony changed the character of the day completely. The weather was wonderful, and the enclosed lawn became a relaxed summer garden party with games, drinks and guests enjoying the sunshine.

Dean's 1960s Volkswagen camper van made a brilliant informal seating spot outside, while a wheelbarrow filled with drinks was exactly the kind of small, characterful detail that makes a wedding feel personal.

As evening arrived, everyone gathered around the fire pit. Visually, the day moved from the dark, candlelit ceremony to a bright summer afternoon and finally into the warmth of the firelight — three very different atmospheres within one wedding.

FILMING AT
THE GREAT BARN

A filmmaker's perspective on a Devon wedding venue where atmosphere is considered from the morning preparations through to the evening.

01

BOTH SIDES OF THE MORNING

Having both bride and groom preparations within the same complex made it possible to capture Dean and Charlotte's mornings naturally, moving between the two without losing the rhythm of either.

For a wedding film, that gives the opening of the story a lovely balance — two people preparing separately before everything comes together.

02

CONTROLLED LIGHT

The Barn's adjustable lighting was one of the things that impressed me most on that first visit. Rather than treating a dark interior as something to overcome, the lighting gave the ceremony its character.

The crossing beams and candlelight created shape, contrast and atmosphere — exactly the qualities that can make an indoor ceremony feel particularly cinematic on film.

03

THE DAY OPENS OUT

Outside, the enclosed lawn gave guests space to settle into the afternoon without losing that intimate, private feeling.

Garden games, the camper van, drinks in the sunshine and the evening fire pit all gave the film natural transitions and little moments of personality between the bigger parts of the day.

ONE I REMEMBER
FOR ANOTHER REASON.

There's another reason Dean + Charlotte's wedding has stayed with me. My Dad came along that day and helped me carry bags and equipment around the venue.

Wedding filmmaking usually means spending the day concentrating on somebody else's family. Getting to spend this one alongside a little of my own makes it a particularly fond memory.

I CAME BACK.

Dean + Charlotte's wedding wasn't my last time working at The Great Barn. I later returned to create a promotional film for the venue itself.

The owners had worked as television producers before their life at The Great Barn, so there was a natural understanding of how much atmosphere, movement and feeling can be communicated through film.

That attention to the visual experience of a wedding — from the controllable lighting inside the Barn to the way the grounds work throughout the day — is something I noticed on my very first visit.

LET THE DAY
HAPPEN.

I'm Samuel, the filmmaker behind Tick Tock Films. For more than a decade I've been filming weddings across Devon and the South West, capturing days as they naturally unfold rather than turning them into a production.

Dean + Charlotte's wedding is a lovely example of why that matters: beautiful light and an incredible setting gave the film its visual character, while the people, the laughter and all the little details gave it its meaning.
